On 16 October 1986, Reinhold Messner reached the summit of Lhotse (8,516 m), thereby becoming the first man to have climbed all 14 peaks over 8,000 metres. It took him a total of 16 years to complete this gruelling feat, carrying out all the ascents without the use of oxygen.
